Don’t you get tired of religions that – based on theological guesswork – claim to own a patent on what constitutes the family?

Families are for always in the eyes of God.

Family Story Because there’s more than one right way to be a family

Conservatives have long lamented the disintegration of the “traditional” family. Their version of ‘family values’ has produced organizations like Focus on the Family, and the Family Research Council. But they don’t speak for most of us. It’s past time that we take back the conservative claim to family.

That’s where Family Story comes in.

Family Story will develop new research, share aspirational narratives, and highlight the innovative and compelling ideas, practices, and solutions that families and communities have developed. We will offer inspiring models for new American dreams. We will push back against harmful stereotypes and cultural stigma. We will separate social problems like poverty, violence, and poor school performance from family structure, and contest the myth that the nuclear family is the solution to these challenges.

Family Story is a new national communications hub dedicated to shifting the conversation about families today from one of judgment, hopelessness, and despair to a beautiful new vision of families and family life to which we can each aspire.

Our mission is to create a conversation that meets people where they are, embraces the dignity and value of a wider range of family arrangements, and elevates models that illustrate the resilience and creativity of families today.

In March of 2015, a fairy god sister introduced Nicole Rodgers to Mia Birdsong via Twitter. Nicole had spent the prior year or so researching changes to family and household structure over the past half century, and public attitudes towards those changes. She envisioned a brand new organization that could utilize communications and cultural change to radically shift the conversation about family. And she was looking for someone to help her pull it off. After connecting with Mia, Nicole asked Mia to be her partner and help her raise the new organizational baby she’d conceived. Mia said yes, and they’ve been happily co-parenting Family Story ever since.
